Biographical sketch

After finishing his gymnasium education, Guus Schrijvers studied Economics in Amsterdam. He graduated cum laude in 1973 on post-war economic conditions under the supervision of prof. Wim Duisenberg and also on the subject of self care departments in hospitals with prof. Joop Hattinga Verschure. In 1980 he conferred a doctors degree in Maastricht on the subject of ‘regional development and financing of British, Swedish and Dutch Healthcare’. He graduated under the wings of the founder of Dutch Health economics prof. Lou Groot and Hattinga Verschure, who is mentioned before. In the period of 1974-1984 Schrijvers was a member of the town counsel of Utrecht with the ‘Partij van de Arbeid’. He handled cases regarding Public Health, Welfare, Culture and Finance. On june first of 1987 he became a professor Public Health together with prof. Joop van Londen for the Medical Faculty of the University of Utrecht. This meant a change from macro subjects, like the arrangement of the health insurance system to smaller projects like education of diabetics. Together with Van Londen Schrijvers focussed on innovations in home care and [ketenzorg]. Later on these activities would be joint together in ‘Disease Management’. Ten years later he added an interest in chains of emergency care to this. His expertise on these subjects comes forward in the book ‘Moderne Patiëntenzorg in Nederland’, which he co-wrote in 2002 with deputy chief inspector Drs. Nico Oudendijk. Schrijvers is chief editor of the peer reviewed International Journal of Integrated Care. Besides this he is also a member of several committees regarding Public Health, and a much wanted public speaker on subject of Emergency Care and Chronical Care.

Interests and focus

From the very beginning enhancing education in Social Health and Public Health had schrijver full attention. When Van Londen and he started in these areas, it was all very new and in a beginners stage. Schrijver: “It felt like a great achievment when on the second of April 1994 the first medical students had an internship Social Health with a GGD and the Arbodienst, after seven years of bickering”. In 1999 a new curriculum for medical students was developed, which led to very busy years until 2006 for Schrijvers and his college dr. Gerdien de Weert to keep up with all the developments in the Social Health educational programme. The pieces for his lectures were joint together in the international release Health and ‘Health Care in the Netherlands’. On the first of june 2007 the research activities of Schrijvers will be joint in the Unit care Innovations within the Julius Centre, which he founded in 1996 with prof. Rick Grobbee. His interests still are with Disease management and emergency Care. Schrijvers has ambition to write two more books which will have titels along the lines of ‘Modern Health and Health Care in the Netherlands’ and ‘Entrepreneurial ambitions and equal care access’. He recognizes that these two subjects are very difficult to reconcile, but his expertise as a macro economist will certainly be of the greatest importance in this.
