Biographical sketch

Johannes JM van Delden (1960) is professor of medical ethics at the medical school of Utrecht University. He also works as a nursing home physician in a nursing home in the Netherlands. He wrote a thesis on the medical and ethical aspects of Do Not Resuscitate orders. Also, he was one of the principal researchers of the study of medical decisions concerning the end of life for the Remmelink committee. He was secretary of the International Association of Bioethics. His special fields of interest are: research ethics, moral problems at the end of life and moral problems in the care for the elderly.

Interests and focus

Research ethics: our focus is on the conditions under which a responsible innovation in drug development will be possible and on issues of justice in research. End of life ethics: our focus is on understanding the choices of practitioners and the development of moral frameworks for practices such as palliative sedation. Moral problems in the care for the elderly. The focus will be on the ethical issues of concrete practices such as vaccination against influenza of health care personnel and diagnostic choices of nursing home physicians. Teaching: an important development in the medical curriculum of the UMC Utrecht is the introduction of the 8 weeks course on medical humanities. This is an interdisciplinary field in which medical ethics, health law, philosophy and history of medicine, medical sociology and the arts come together.
